  7.     Hawaii was never like this. In the Australian Outback for
  8. his latest film in what he calls "life after Magnum," TOM
  9. SELLECK first mastered the lariat, then had to lasso a
  10. kangaroo. He did both admirably. "No tricks," he told director
  11. Simon Wincer. "No doubles. And a real kangaroo." In Quigley
  12. Down Under, Selleck plays a 19th century rifleman who comes to
  13. the defense of the aborigine. Learning the ropes was easier
  14. than getting a grip on the language to converse with the
  15. aboriginal extras on the set. After "Hello" and "Where's the
  16. water hole?" Selleck was just about speechless.
